Introduction To The Diploma

The Diploma is an exciting new 14-19 qualification that will bring an innovative approach to learning. It will enable students to gain knowledge, understanding and hands-on experience of sectors that they are interested in, while putting new skills into practice.

The Diploma is a composite qualification made up of three components: principal learning; generic learning; and Additional and/or Specialist Learning (ASL). Each of these components comprises stand-alone qualifications, and other learning (such as a mandatory periods of work experience) that when aggregated, form the full Diploma.

Sports Leaders UK has been accepted as a Component Awarding Body, which means it can award Additional and/or Specialist Learning (ASL) for the Diploma.

Additional and/or Specialist Learning (ASL) will give learners the opportunity to deepen or broaden their learning. Within ASL, learners can choose qualifications that lead them in a particular direction. For example, by taking a mathematics qualification within the engineering Diploma, they will develop a learning programme that leads to a degree-level course in engineering. Or learners can pursue interests that broaden their learning experience, for example by choosing a language qualification.

Diplomas are offered at the following levels: Foundation (level 1), Higher (level 2), and Progression and Advanced (level 3). Diplomas began to be available from September 2008 and will be offered in all 17 subject/sector areas from 2011.

The Sports Leaders UK qualifications will be in the ASL catalogue when it is published in August 2010, so you can build our leadership courses into your Diploma programme.
